Does Your Bible Know Your Grip?

by Richard, SFCC Youth Pastor

Your Bible should not be treated like fine china, only to be brought out during special occasions.

Our chairs, our sofas, our recliners, our baseball bats, fishing poles, remote controls, computers, cell phones, all have one thing in common... they know us far too well. The imprint of our lives, are all over these things. But what about our Bibles?

Psalms 119:105

Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

  • Have you ever been camping and you're o a dark trail, and you needed a flashlight to see where you were going?
  • If you had a flashlight, where must it be in order to do it's job? (In your hand of course)

A light on a dark path is useless unless you have in on and IN YOUR HAND. That would make sense right? Yet so many times we allow ourselves, our families, schools and country dwell on that path in darkness; blind to the twists and turns of that path, blind to the holes we may encounter.

Matthew 5:16

Let YOUR LIGHT so shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

YOUR LIGHT. What makes a light bulb shine? Electricity, where does the electricity come from? A power source, an origin of that power.

What makes your spiritual light shine? God, where is that power source? God, who is God?

John 1:1

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Our light shines on a darker world, not so others can praise us or praise our works, so that they can direct their praises to God. We see that God's Word is a direct power source for our light, so why would we as vessels who need to shine and vessels that need energy want to be disconnected from our power source? We have to be willing to answer that call the call that is upon ALL of our lives.

God's Word

A guide for a successful life
A map to and on the road less traveled
Factual based decision making tool

But we live our lives powerless, and putting off just a whimper of light when we answer that call can put off a light so beautiful and bright, not only will you brighten your path, but you can help brighten the path of others that could be struggling to get the light on.

Hebrews 4:12 (Amplified)

For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword penetrating to the dividing line of the breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit and of joints and marrow (of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart.

Ephesians 6:13-18 (The Message)

Be prepared. You're up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it's all over but the shouting you'll still be on your feet. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation are more than words. Learn how to apply them. You'll need them throughout your life. God's Word is an indispensable weapon. In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other's spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out.

Gladius - is the latin word for "sword"

Now back when the Roman Empire was thriving, the weapon of choice was a double edged sword. Now these swords were produced in mass quantities. If you were in the military, chances are that the man next to you had a very similar sword, if not the same one. But if you were important enough and had a high enough ranking, then you could have a custom sword with a custom blade and a custom grip.

You might be wondering, why would you personalize something like that? Easy, you would have the weight of the sword just like you like it, and the grip would be set just perfect for your hand, so that you would not drop your sword during battle.

It's unfortunate that many times we treat our Bibles just like any other common book, sitting there not getting used, collecting dust, just like a phone book. We don't touch a phonebook unless we absolutely need it. And knowing that God's Word is our weapon, we go into spiritual battle not knowing how to use it, not having a good grip on our weapon.

What if our Bibles could talk? OH NO!! What would your Bible say?

In order for our Bible to know our grip, other things like the remote, cell phone, and computer need to see our grip less.

Many times someone will preach on reading your Bible more, praying more, or loving the hard to love; you know the messages that sometimes can be very convicting. Now there may be some of that going on right now, ad that's great... but remember that all we have to do is get started, discipline ourselves to know God's Word. Take that first step, right now.

If you have never known God as your personal Lord and Savior, then know Him today. If you want God's Word to be the light to your path, and the energy to your light, or if you need prayer; don't go another day without taking that first step.
